How much PST will you save?
Compare the PST ICBC charges on the Black Book value with the PST you'd pay using a FIN 320 appraisal. If you've already registered, the saving is roughly what you could get refunded.
BC PST on private sales: 12% for passenger vehicles under $125,000 and 20% at $125,000 or more. Most non-passenger vehicles are 12% at any price. Source: BC Bulletin PST 308.
How it's worked out
- Without an appraisalPST is charged on the higher of what you paid and the Black Book average wholesale value.
- With a FIN 320 appraisalIf what you paid and the appraised value are both below Black Book, PST is charged on the higher of those two.
- Your savingThe difference between the two. It can never take PST below what's due on your purchase price.

This is an estimate. The appraised value depends on your vehicle's real condition, and ICBC or the Ministry of Finance decides the PST you pay. Check current rates at gov.bc.ca.
